MacDougal Alley, 2006

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, sculptor, art collector, and founder of the Whitney Museum of American Art, kept a studio on MacDougal Alley. In this photograph, Dolly Sloan dances at the center of a group of revelers—costumed for a Village masquerade party—cavorting in the alley outside Whitney's studio. Full of station wagons and sports utility vehicles in 2006, MacDougal Alley seems a long way from its bohemian artistic past.
