Hell Hole

Hell Hole

1917
Etching and aquatint, 8 x 10 in.
Delaware Art Museum, gift of Mrs. Helen Farr Sloan, 1963 (1963-20.109).

This etching commemorates the back room of Tom Wallace's bar, the Golden Swan, a dive bar at the corner of Sixth Avenue and West Fourth Street. Popular with the writers, artists, and the theatrical crowd, the Swan's patrons included playwright Eugene O'Neill (upper right) and actor Charles Ellis (in profile; lower left). The location is now the site of the Golden Swan Gardens.
